What are skunks? Skunks are small mammals that are black in color and have white stripes on their backs and many people know them for their stinky sprays. These nocturnal creatures are omnivores and they feed on insects, fruits, worms, and rodents though you can find them going through garbage in your dumpsters. I bet you didn’t know that skunks can transmit rabies. We offer skunk control services and you can locate our main office in Napa. Give us a call at (800) 430-3778 and you won’t spot any of these skunks happily lingering through your backyard.
Skunks feed on some unwanted harmful pests which are beneficial to us but just like moles, skunks have a habit of burrowing, causing damage to your lawn and garden. If you are a poultry farmer, skunks could be your worst nightmare as they kill poultry and feed on eggs. Skunks feed on corn and they cause significant damage to structures. Skunks can cause you quite a headache but we have devoted all our time and effort to help you get rid of these creatures.
We control skunks through the following methods:
- Exclusion Through Fencing
Erecting a fence helps keep skunks off your property as they are not excellent climbers but this fence has to run a few feet under the ground since they can also opt to burrow their way past the fence.
Skunks are known to have very strong senses of smell and by using granular or liquid deterrents that irritate their noses; the skunks will always avoid the area. Another skunk repellant that works effectively is light. Skunks being nocturnal, their eyes are sensitive to light and bright light drives them away.
This is not a humane way to eradicate the skunks but we use this where the skunks have proven to be a menace and all other methods of control are not working as they should. We use gas cartridges like Charcoal – Sulfur cartridges that eliminate the skunks all other animals that may be residing in the burrows.
Skunks may have taken residence in your backyard and we use live skunk traps which are humane traps that capture the skunks and we release them elsewhere. There are two types of traps that we use and they include the box and leg hold traps. Fish, peanut butter, poultry tharms, and sardines are used as bait to draw the skunks into the traps.
- Modifying Skunk Habitats
Disposing of garbage and getting rid of skunks’ food sources will make your lawn and backyard less attractive to skunks.
This is also a method of skunk control where skunks are shot after being trapped but we don’t use this method. Quite inhumane I’d say.
It is important to note that some skunks are legally protected in some states so killing them is not an option. It is best to control skunks before their mating season because after that you may have more skunks to deal with.
